Alzheimer Netherlands launches Dementie.nl: an online platform which supports care-givers in sharing experiences with fellow-caregivers and healthcare professionals.

In the Netherlands, an estimated 290,000 people are living with dementia. This number is expected to rise to 400,000 by 2050, not only because there will be more old people in the Netherlands, but their average age will become progressively higher. On average, people live with dementia for eight years: six years at home and two years in residential care. Alongside research and better care standards, the Dementia Delta Plan aims to create dementia-friendly communities. The campaign 'Samen Dementievriendelijk' teaches people to recognise and help people living with dementia. The campaign also targets companies and organisations.

Dutch Students Live in Nursing Homes

Another Dutch example are the nursing homes were young students live. Drinking games, sex talk and jigsaws - this is life in a unique Dutch retirement home. Young and old live side-by-side sharing the joys of life, and the sadness of death, together. Students live (almost) rent free amongst the elderly residents. In exchange the students work 24- 30 hours per month within the home, helping with dinner and chores but mainly socializing with their older neighbors. The students are able to come and go as they please.
