An experiment was made on how to support learner's learning during technical courses.

Here is the process followed:

Topic : Introduction to forest inventory

Step 1 : Inventory of forestry plot

The teacher does a demonstration of an inventory an forestry plot et give explanations of data to collect. Then, the students are share in group of three et they move to a forest plot to do the same inventory with different tools. The teacher provide during the session some additionnal informations for each group.
Goal : Help to get new knowledge by a training session on a ground before providing courses in a classroom
Document : Inventory sheet with explanations

Step 2 : Classroom session to learn forest inventory

Face to face usual training to learn the knowledge covered during step 1
Goal : organize and strengthen ground knowledge
Document : Paper courses with writing area / Presentation with PPT

Step 3 : Inventory of forestry plot

Same exercise but with inventory sheet without information. Possibility to do several sessions.
Goal : Confirm knowledge and have a training before evaluation
Document : Inventory sheet without explanations

Step 4 : Evaluation of practice

Evaluation of practice and knowledge on a new forest plot
Goal : Evaluation of skills after learning session (theory and practice)
Document : Evaluation grid of forest plot’s inventory

Conclusion
The assessment is based on the active learning that learners produced in step 3. The idea is that learners manage to produce work that shows their adaptability to the different situations (different types of forests, trees, contexts,...) with which they may be confronted. This active learning is an optimal way to ensure the proper integration and understanding of the knowledge/skills required by learners.
